Chandler’s Hamilton Library closed for renovations

Chandler’s Hamilton Library will be closed for renovations Friday through Wednesday, Aug. 5.
The library, located on the Hamilton High School campus at 3700 S. Arizona Ave., will reopen Thursday, Aug. 6, for normal operating hours: 7:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Residents are encouraged to use the Downtown Library at 22 S. Delaware St., which is 5 miles north on Arizona Avenue.

Church donates food for Chandler CARE Center

Members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church are donating more than 1,000 pounds of food to the Chandler CARE Center this week, the largest donation of the year, said Susan Horan, the center’s director. The rice and beans will arrive Tuesday and will be rebagged by volunteers and disbursed. Horan estimates 175 families will benefit from the donation. “What’s significant is even in these hard economic times, a church is doing a ‘Christmas in July,’” Horan said. “They realize people need help with food throughout the year.” The center is located at San Marcos Elementary School, 451 W Frye Road.

Santan Junior High student honored for writing

Dee Dee Walker, a seventh-grade student at Santan Junior High, won fourth place in the Chandler Public Library poetry contest. She was the youngest applicant, and her poem will be printed in an anthology of poetry.

Chandler students celebrate moms

The kindergarten classes at Chandler’s Weinberg Elementary are celebrating Mother’s Day. Some classes are asking moms and dads to come and eat with their child during lunch time. Lunch will be followed with a special ice cream snack and time to play on the playground. Other classes have invited the moms to come in and spend time in the classroom for an hour. The activities will include listening to the children sing a few songs, creating a ladybug cookie, and making a ladybug frame, which will be complete when a picture of the mom and child is added. We hope all of the mothers enjoy their special time at our school.

Willis Junior High kids honored

This news came into the Tribune today: On April 4th, Willis Junior High CATS (Chandler Unified School District’s gifted program) students competed in the State Competition for National History Day at Fountain Hills. National History Day is a contest to inspire students to revive history and use critical thinking skills to analyze primary and secondary sources. This years theme is The Individual - Actions and Legacies. Only two entries per category for each state are allowed to compete at nationals. The students have been working on this project since August.
Those chosen to represent Arizona at the national contest in Washington D.C. from Willis are: John Wang, 8th grade (First place individual exhibit) and Cali Cappuccio, 7th grade (second place individual exhibit).
Group exhibits are 7th graders Elijah Olivas and Jeremy Duffy (first place) and 8th graders Ali Muller and Mary Nguyen (second place). For documentaries, Corey Nelson - 8th grade (first place Individual documentary) and for 7th grade Sean Graham and Bryce Royball (first place group documentary) and Adithya Nott and Oliver Dorr (second place group documentary). Shandel Roberts teaches language arts and social studies to the 7th graders and Katie Dial teaches Language Arts and Social Studies to the 8th graders.

This is a tremendous academic accomplishment for these students.

Basha High student wins Intel scholarship

Guidance counselor Rebecca Clark extends her congratulations to Duyen Vo for earning a $4,000 scholarship from Intel for children of employees.

Basha High School Guidance Counselor, Rebecca Clark extends her congratulations to Duyen Vo whose hard work has really paid off! Basha High senior Duyen Vo, has been selected from over 1,900 highly qualified applicants as a recipient of the Intel Scholarship for Employees’ Children. She will be receiving a scholarship in the amount of $4,000.00. for the college of her choice.

Chandler resident wins second place at state spelling bee

Raymie Humbert, an eighth grade student at Kyrene del Pueblo Middle School in Chandler, too second place in Saturday’s state spelling bee championship. Peoria’s So-Young Chung took the title. Her prize package includes an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. for her and one chaperone for the week of the Spelling Bee, compliments of the Bee’s presenting sponsor US Airways. She will also receive a 60-volume set of The Great Books of the Western World from Harrison Middleton University, a $100 Savings Bond, a one-year subscription to Encyclopedia Britannica online, $500.00 and Webster’s Third New International Dictionary. The Arizona Educational Foundation’s (AEF) State Spelling Bee was held Saturday, March 28, at Eight/Arizona PBS in Stauffer Hall at Arizona State University. So-Young is in seventh grade at Terramar Elementary School in Peoria.
So-Young out-spelled 26 other students with the winning word solecism in the 15th round of the Bee. (Solecism [sol-uh-siz-uhm] an ungrammatical combination of words in a sentence). So-Young will represent Arizona at the 82nd Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. from May 26-28.
The third- through fifth-place finalists were: 3rd Place: Jim Denker, 8th grade, Christian Home Educators of Tucson, Tucson; 4th Place: Hannah Fechter, 7th grade, Alhambra Traditional School, Phoenix; 5th Place: David Joe, 8th grade, White Cliffs Middle School, Kingman.

This was the 10th year the Arizona Educational Foundation sponsored the Arizona Spelling Bee. The 2009 Arizona State Spelling Bee will air on Eight/Arizona PBS Channel 8 at 5 p.m. Sunday, April 12; 11 p.m. Wednesday, April 15 and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 19. The National Bee will be broadcast live on ESPN and ABC.

Chandler students win Special Olympics state basketball title

Please give a BIG shout out to Albert Rodriguez, Kirsten Amberson, Athena Green, and Celeste Cantsee for taking home the GOLD MEDAL this weekend in the Special Olympics State Basketball Tournament. They competed against and beat 2 teams from Scottsdale, Mesa and Tucson to get the gold.

Basha High students earn top math honors

Thirteen of Chandler Unified’s Basha High School students competed in the 60th annual American Mathematics Contest (AMC) 12 and six students participated in the 10th annual American Mathematics Contest (AMC) 10. The contest is given at participating schools internationally. Students who score in the top three on the AMC 12 are used to rank the school both regionally and nationally.

Basha senior Thomas Nall, who earned the AMC12 top score, and Joe Schneider, who earned the top AMC 10 score, were joined by Manasas Kalluri, Jayce Pangilinan, Joyce Zhang and Sudhanshu Ambadipudi, who also earned recognition as achieving the “top three scores” in their given contest.
